Our Team | Samantha Cheng
My name is Samantha Cheng and I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors. I provide individual counselling services to both adults and youth (14 years old +) at Cross Roads Naturopathic.
I believe that feeling seen and heard is a crucial part of the human experience, and foundational in allowing individuals to foster their own sense of belonging and significance in the world. It is my passion for this process that drew me to this field, and it is my joy to witness individuals embarking on journeys of discovery that lead to greater abilities to move, act, and speak from an authentic and integrated place that acknowledges and honours their voices, needs, and experiences.
I am passionate about working with individuals from a variety of backgrounds, and believe that diversity in age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, cultural background, religion, ability, relationship status and family situation is something to be celebrated. There is so much we can learn from one another, and I truly believe that these different experiences are valuable and enriching to our lives. Outside of my Cross Roads Naturopathic, I also work as a Youth and Family Therapist at South Vancouver Youth Centre. Through this work, I am constantly reminded that we really are all in this together - that the exploration of an individual's life, sense of self, or being, is incomplete without acknowledging the context in which an individual lives.
Counselling is a safe space in which individuals are able to take a closer look at who they are. This may include (but is not limited to) taking stock of where they are now, where they have come from, and where they would like to go, before setting off on their way again with greater clarity and a renewed sense of hope and well-being.
... a safe and encouraging environment where you can truly be yourself
... an attitude of openness to exploration
... a chance to pause and process, rest and reflect
... the learning of new tools
... the unlearning of old strategies that are perhaps no longer serving you
... the integration of life events into your authentic sense of self and identity
I believe that anyone can begin to move from surviving to thriving, and towards what they are fully capable of, be it in baby steps or in leaps and bounds. My clients have shared with me that our work together is grounding and deeply nourishing, with ripple effects that extend into their everyday encounters with the world.
Some of the areas in which I work include:
-Grief and Loss
-Questions of Meaning and Identity
-Interpersonal concerns and relational issues
I consider myself to be an eclectic therapist, though first and foremost, one who holds a person-centred stance. By this, I mean that while well-versed in a number of different approaches and techniques, I will select which tools may be appropriate, according to a one's particular circumstances, preferences, and needs. As time goes on, the kind of work we do together will continue to be shaped according to what my clients are finding to be most helpful.
Some of the ways in which I practice include:
-Holistically addressing a person's Biopsychosocial experience
-CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)
With a passion for social justice, and rooted in a strengths-based, collaborative approach, I see my work as an opportunity to join with others on their journey to discover all that they already are, and to further support them to become who they would like to be.
It is my honour and privilege to bear witness to both the tough and tender moments along the way. For more information or to set up an appointment, call 604.568.6899 or email email@example.com
